Joseph immigrated to the United States in 1864 and settled in Philadelphia, PA where he worked as a carpenter for several years. The financial panic of the late 1880's brought a halt to construction in the area and he was forced to look elsewhere for work. He moved to Northern Kentucky in 1888 and was hired by the Johnson Mill company, where he was to work for the rest of his life. He rose to the position of lead planner for the mill.
His hobby was riding horses of which he owned two for many years which he kept boarded at a nearby farm. After the death of his wife, Anna, he looked more and more to his horses for comfort, but a riding accident in 1928 left him with a severe limp. He was forced to sell his horses and rely only on his automobile for riding enjoyment.
In 1931, he contracted pneumonia and, after a short time, died in his bed at home. He was survived by his two sons, Joseph and Max, and his daughter Mary.
